jubilee-allstars

We’ve been taking a trip down memory lane for reasons to be explained at a later date but we rediscovered this hour long documentary featured as part of the excellent Great Irish Bands series over on Dublin Opinion. Hats off to the producers, we would love something similar on any number of bands, The Stars Of Heaven anyone?

Jubilee Allstars were Niall McCormack (vocals & guitar), Barry McCormack (vocals & guitar), Fergus McCormack (vocals & bass) and Lee Casey (drums). They recorded this session for John Peel on Jan 11th 1987.

Into+Paradise

The ever reliable Blackpool Sentinel yesterday published another excellent read on local favourites Into Paradise. As serendipity would have it we also just received a recording from Colm in Arklow of a session previously posted but now with better audio so we’ve decided what the heck. The session recorded for Dave Fanning on Jan 13th 1986 featured 3 further tracks which we’d love to hear – ‘Alone Again’, ‘A Good and Honest Man’ and ‘John’. Incidentally does anyone recognise the guest host sitting in for Dave? We have it on good authority that it could be Fachtna O’Kelly but stand to be corrected. Update: Thanks to Colm we have a further track.

Today’s post was inspired by the Cloudberry Records blog, a site dedicated to digging out indiepop new and old, unearthing quite a few gems from bands close to our hearts. Roque specialises in forensic research on occasion following up with interviews, e.g. Sean A McDermott of Mickey Rourke’s Fridge. Many of the Irish bands featured have appeared here but others like the Bruce Wayne Experience prompted a visit to the attic.

The Bruce Wayne Experience were a 5 piece active from 1988 – 1991. The lineup was David O’Connor (vocals), Steve O’Connor (guitar), Steve Connaughton (bass), David Houlihan (keyboards) and Woppy (drums).

From Offaly, The Strong Are Lonely were Ciaran Guinan (vocals), Tom Jamieson (drums), Daragh Connolly (keyboards), Finn Corrigan (keyboards/guitars), Kieran Egan (guitars), Ronan McDermott (bass). They recorded a Fanning session on 24/02/1986 featuring: ‘Paranoid Man’, ‘Wasted Time’ and ‘This Way Up’. While at RTE mixing the session, they had a visit from Paul McGuinness of U2 and Mother Records. A possible one-single deal with Mother was mooted, but never materialised. The band describe the following track as from the Fanning session so I’m going to post and hope someone can shed some more light..

water has memory

On 2nd December 2013 Dan Hegarty broadcast an all new session from David Long of Into Paradise. David was accompanied in Studio 8 by Joe Fahey of Luggage. Here’s what the RTE 2fm website wrote:

It’s quite likely that David Long’s album ‘Water Has Memory’ won’t feature alongside names like Arcade Fire, Rudimental, and Foals in the numerous end of year album polls. Don’t let that put you off; Long’s debut ranks among the finest domestic albums of the year. After spending the late 1980s and early 1990s as vocalist with Into Paradise, David Long returned with new songs, and a new sound.

From Cork, Cypress Mine! were Ciaran O’Tuama (vocals), Ian Olney (guitar), Denis O’Mullane (bass) and Mark Healy (drums). They last featured here a mere 4 years ago and now finally we have uncovered the elusive Fanning session. Thank you to the owner of this tape whose shoebox of cassettes means activity around these parts is about to pick up. This session was recorded on 21st April 1986.

I remember that session in RTE for a few reasons. One was they had to change a plug and had to send for an electrician as no-one else was allowed do it. We also had our own engineer with us and they wouldn’t let him touch any of the gear. We needed reverb in the studio we were in and they had to ring someone and have the reverb re-routed from one of the other studios to the one we were in. I still have no idea how they did that. Top that off with “you can’t have a copy of what you just recorded …” and you have a memorable day right there 🙂

Puppy+Love+Bomb+Not+Listening

From Dublin, Puppy Love Bomb were formed in 1991 by Marc Carroll (vocals, guitar), Alan Cullivan (bass) and Neil Dowling (drums). The band released 3 singles on Rough Trade in 1994 – ‘Too Busy Thinking’, ‘Not Listening’ and ‘Bobby Milk’. This session for Dave Fanning on RTE 2fm was recorded in 1993. ‘Almost A Star’ was later rerecorded as ‘Radio Stars’ for the debut of Marc Carroll’s subsequent band, The Hormones.

“We just did three weeks in Europe with Sugar,” Marc says with a smile, “and that personally has been the biggest thing in my musical career, because of my love of Bob Mould and Husker Dü. The very last night in Leeds, he joined us onstage and we all played ‘Ticket To Ride.’ And the place was electric. And the last time Bob Mould had joined a band was with REM in Los Angeles. So, here he was with three knackers from Dublin. So, that was really good.”

Apologies for the relative silence of late, the tape supply has dwindled somewhat so we are now reliant on excavations from the field. If you have any tapes in the attic why not dig them out and see what you can find?

As is now tradition on a bank holiday, Dan Hegarty recently dug out this Cactus World News session for Dave Fanning from the RTE archives. We had already posted one track from this session but are now reposting with the full session.

Irish Peel Sessions

PeelPostcardIreland

Compiling a complete list of Fanning sessions is almost as elusive as finding the holy grail. Much easier is a list of Irish acts who recorded sessions for the late great John Peel. Some of these have been released officially on the Strange Fruit label and I may start tracking down a few more of those that didn’t. If a band recorded more than one session the number of sessions recorded follows in brackets. The names are linked to the BBC page for that artist. One day RTE might take a leaf out of the BBC’s book.

Ash (4), Bees Make Honey, Big Self, The Bothy Band (3), Boys Of The Lough (7), Boomtown Rats (2), Paul Brady, Cane 141, The Chieftains (5), The Cranberries, De Danann, Dr Strangely Strange, Eire Apparent, Eleven, The Fatima Mansions (2), Finbar & Eddie Furey (3), Frank & Walters, Rory Gallagher (2), Christie Hennessy, Hey Paulette, The Hitchers, Horslips (3), A House (2), In Dust, In Tua Nua, Joyrider (3), The Johnstons, Jubilee Allstars, Luggage, Microdisney (6), The Moondogs, My Bloody Valentine, Na Fili (3), Nirvana with the Syd Dale Orchestra, The Outcasts (2), Pet Lamb (2), Planxty (3), The Pogues (2), Protex, Rollerskate Skinny, Rudi, Rumble ?, The Sewing Room, Sharon Shannon, Skid Row, The Stars Of Heaven (4), Stiff Little Fingers (4), Stump (4), The Sultans Of Ping FC, Taste, The Tearjerkers (2), That Petrol Emotion (3), Therapy? (2), The Undertones (6), Thin Lizzy (9), Tir Na nOg (4), Tunic (4), The Vipers, Gay & Terry Woods, The Would Be’s, Xdreamysts, Zerra 1 (2)

Corrections welcome, e.g. missing bands or those incorrectly flagged as Irish.

Active from 1988-1990 the Dublin band released one single ‘Waiting (For Love To Appear)’ on Bloodred Records in 1990. They recorded a Fanning session in 1989 and the following is the only track of the four which can be tracked down. For more Hellfire Club action check out Joe Usher’s YouTube channel where you’ll find 1988 recordings of the band in McGonagles supporting The Fountainhead and Blue in Heaven. It’s become tradition now that a bank holiday sees Ian Wilson dispatched to the RTE 2fm session archives to dig out classic sessions for Dan Hegarty to play on his show. Monday last was no disappointment with session tracks from Emperor of Icecream, Into Paradise and finally Whipping Boy. We are already familiar with their 1995 session but on Monday Dan chose to dig out the 1990 session and played the following track..

‘Valentine 69’ (1990)

On June 12th 2012 Dan repeated the session this time in full and here are the remaining tracks. The original Whipping Boy lineup which was presumably the same for this session was Fearghal McKee (vocals), Paul Page (guitar), Myles McDonnell (bass, vocals) and Colm Hassett (drums).

In November 2018 in a facebook comment Paul Page wrote:

That session sounded so much better than the EP. Remember some talk of approaching RTE to get permission to use it. Ended up re-recording those tracks & they just sounded weaker.

Strange Passion – Explorations in Irish Post Punk, DIY and Electronic Music 1980-83

Posted in Fanning, session with tags , on May 5, 2012 by Fanning Sessions

The first ever compendium of Irish post punk and new wave – featuring extensive liner notes, rare photos with the full participation of the featured artists and bands.

Released on Cache Cache a new post-punk record label set up by Finders Keepers dedicated to seeking out shyly excitable electric pop music from the not too distant past.

Focusing on a three year period from 1980 to 1983, Strange Passion is a compilation of rare, unheralded and unreleased Irish music that emerged after the first wave of punk and new wave bands. A time when the raw primitive sounds of punk began to absorb new ideas and technologies and emerging acts were reaching audiences on an unprecedented scale thanks to new magazines such as Hot Press and Heat, RTE Radio 2 and it’s Fanning Sessions, as well as new youth magazine programmes on national TV like Anything Goes. Access to UK’s broadcasting and magazine cultural behemoths (Peel, NME, Morley etc.) as well as touring bands such as The Clash and PIL also played their part in creating an appetite for this thrilling new subculture and soon venues such as The Magnet, Dandelion and Project Arts Centre in Dublin and Kampus in Cork became significant live music hubs.

The 14 rare and seldom-travelled Irish post-punk, DIY and electro oddities were compiled from limited privately pressed vinyl and home made cassette by resident B-Music Dublin DJ Darren McCreesh for Cache Cache Records, a new label set up by international crate diggers Finders Keepers:

No More Demos – In Dublin #140 (13/11/1981)

Posted in Fanning, Music, session with tags , , , on April 27, 2012 by Fanning Sessions

This article from In Dublin magazine offers some interesting background on the Fanning sessions. According to the piece ‘No More Demos’ by Gerard Siggins, when the new radio centre in Donnybrook was built “the two 16 track studios lay idle for eight years until Ian Wilson opened them (after much wrangling with Radio 1) to the cream of Ireland’s rock bands”. At the time of the article on 13th November 1981 the “Rock Show sessions” were a year old and the 41st visitors to Studio 8 were “a fine young band” from Waterford Neuro. The photo shows engineer Colm O’Rourke and a youthful Ian Wilson. For more retro scans be sure to check out brandnewretro. Incidentally Paul Butler of Neuro is currently active with Propellor Palms and was the subject of a recent interview in Hot Press.

Into Paradise (1990 Session)

Into Paradise were Dave Long (vocals, guitar), Rachel Tighe (bass), James Eadie (guitar, keyboards) and Ronan Clarke (drums). Dave explains at the end of the recording that this repeat airing of the session was broadcast just before the release of the band’s ‘Change’ EP (22nd May 1990). Owain who dug this out wrote “the session version of ‘Change’ is pretty awesome in my view and much better than the released version”. Maybe Dan Hegarty and Ian Wilson might consider this one for their next “classic session” feature on Dan’s RTE 2XM/2FM show ‘The Alternative‘?  Anyone have a copy of the fourth and final track ‘Heaven’? Update: Thank you Owain for locating the missing track!

THE OUTCASTS - bandpic2
Thanks to long time supporter Rob for digging this one out. The Outcasts were a Belfast punk band formed in 1978 by Greg Cowan (vocals/bass), Colin Getgood (guitar), Martin Cowan (guitar) and Colin Cowan (drums). They appeared in the John T. Davis’ ‘Shellshock Rock‘ documentary on NI punk and later in their own doc ‘Self Conscious Over You’. In mid 1980 Greg Cowan was injured in a motorbike accident and Gordie Blair (SLF/Rudi) joined on a temporary basis – he actually appears in the ‘Self Concious’ doc. Colin Cowan was tragically killed in a car crash in May 1982. The Outcasts recorded sessions for Dave Fanning, John Peel (2x), Janice Long and Downtown Radio. Incidentally The Outcasts were the most requested act on Dave Couse’s recent ‘An Teach Solas‘. Check them out on facebook. Photo courtesy Museum of Radio Sessions.

Scary Eire (1993 Session)

scaryeire

We’ve been on the lookout for this session for a while but watching the fallout from RTE TV’s ‘Ireland’s Rappers‘ was the spur to look again, a comment on the Irish Times ‘On The Record’ blog by Stevie Grainger rang true:

“I’ll never forget the buzz i got listening to the “Truncheon Song” by Scary Eire on the Dave Fanning show in the early 90s”

One more search and there it was. The audio quality is not the best but we think you’ll get the picture. If anyone has the remaining two session tracks or indeed a higher quality version please get in touch.

Formed in 1990 Scary Eire were a pioneering Irish hip hop outfit featuring Dada Sloosh, DJ Mek, Mr Browne and RiRa. In 2007 they released a compilation ‘The Scary Era’.

Truncheon Song (1993)

On March 19th Dan Hegarty played two tracks from the 1993 Fanning session which he said was not easy to track down. Unfortunately we were not prepared so had to listen back to the show on the RTE player and only caught one track. Thankfully Ian Wilson has announced that Dan will rebroadcast the entire session on Easter Monday so tune in or check back here after that date.

Last night Dan Hegarty repeated the long sought after 1993 session by Limerick band The Cranberries on his RTE 2fm show ‘The Alternative To Sleep’. Dan expressly thanked producer Ian Wilson who obviously had the non trivial task of tracking the original session tape down in the RTE archive. Incidentally there is currently a project underway at RTE to digitise this archive and we await the results with great anticipation. The night this session was recorded the band dropped into Dave Fanning in studio for an interview and you can listen to a recording here.

The Harvest Ministers (No Disco Acoustic Room)

Listening to Donal Dineen reminisce about ‘No Disco’ last week in his ‘An Ode To Radio‘ show got me thinking that I still had a couple of acoustic sessions recorded for that show which I hadnt yet shared. Aoife linked to The Divine Comedy last week and already someone has contacted me with the promise of 4 precious VHS cassettes of recordings. These Acoustic Room sessions were recorded in Fr. Matthew Hall which is just beside the RTE Cork studios. This particular recording is of The Harvest Ministers who we have already featured and they perform ‘I Never Raised My Voice to You’.

We’re big fans of Backwards Into Paradise round these parts so you’ll have to excuse a fourth post featuring that band. This time it’s from a “session tape” as announced by an as yet unidentified announcer. I think you’ll agree that despite the audio quality it’s impressive stuff. Thanks again to Ken for this one.

Nun Attax were a punk band from Cork featuring Finbarr Donnelly (vocals), Ricky Dineen (guitar), Mick Finnegan (guitar/vocals), Philip O’Connell (bass), Keith ‘Smelly’ O’Connell (drums). Mick Finnegan left in 1979 and was replaced by Giordai O’Laoghaire. In July 1980 Giordai O’Laoghaire left to join The Constant Reminders who became Microdisney. In 1981, Donnelly, Dineen and Smelly formed Five Go Down To The Sea and moved to London. Nun Attax recorded a Fanning Session on 9/2/1981 featuring ‘The Woodcutter Song’ / ‘Looking For Words For My Book’ / ‘Alynut’ / ‘Phantom Gobi’ / ‘Eidelweiss’. Dublin Opinion recently featured an excellent interview with Ricky Dineen about the history and evolution of the three bands he was at the heart of; Nun Attax, Five Go Down To The Sea? and Beethoven. Also worth checking out is ‘Get That Monster Off The Stage‘ a radio documentary on Finbarr Donnelly.
