microdisney 2018

Excitement is building for the upcoming Microdisney shows in the National Concert Hall Dublin June 2nd and the Barbican London on June 9th.  Sean O’Hagan and Cathal Coughlan of the band dropped in to the BBC Radio 6 studio yesterday for an interview with Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie. The million dollar question was posed (will there be more shows?), as to the answer.. well you’ll just have to listen in. Watch Sean and Cathal perform ‘Dolly’ as part of the Barbican sessions here. Following up on his recent audio documentary Paul McDermott has just published an oral history of the band.

iron fist in velvet glove microdisney.jpgPaul McDermott is no stranger round these parts and we’ve been looking forward to the fruits of his latest endeavours since round about when we first heard it was in the works. Paul is a lecturer in media studies and journalism and also has a weekly radio show on DublinCityFM. He previously produced documentaries on Stump! and Finbarr Donnelly and this time out he has turned his attention towards another band from those parts Microdisney.  Produced for UCC 98.3FM with assistance of funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, ‘Iron Fist In Velvet Glove: The Story of Microdisney’ features interviews with Cathal Coughlan and Sean O’Hagan, bandmates Tom Fenner, Jon Fell, Giordai UaLaoighre and Dave Galvin. Also featured are fellow musicians Mick Lynch (Stump!), Mark Healy and Ciarán O Tuama (Cypress! Mine), Jim O’Mahony (Belsonic Sound) and Stan Erraught (The Stars of Heaven). Paul also speaks to Robert Forster (The Go-Betweens), Geoff Travis (Rough Trade founder), Andrew Mueller (journalist and writer), Elvera Butler (Downtown Kampus and Reekus Records), Gareth Ryan (Kabuki Records and Rough Trade Distribution) and Richard Boon (Production Manager, Rough Trade Records). It’s a fascinating hour of radio which we enjoyed a lot and look forward to listening again. What’s next Paul? 🙂

Despite the fact that Newstalk insists on broadcasting in mono (even the online stream is mono for crying out loud) I find myself addicted to the new Tom Dunne show. The ‘Back To Mine’ feature is a particular favourite and has included guests such as Terri Hooley, David Holmes, Ben Watt, Gerry Leonard, Jon Savage, Joan As Policewoman, Willy Vlautin, Tracey Thorn, Nina Persson, Martha Reeves, Patrick McCabe, John Grant, Matthew Sweet, Ray Connolly, Conor O’Brien, Josh Ritter, Thomas Walsh and John Connolly.

Recently Tom spoke to Sean O’Hagan of Microdisney and I enjoyed it so much I had to share. The audio is hosted on the Newstalk site here. Subscribe to the show RSS feed here.

The following tracks by Microdisney turned up on the same cassette that featured the recently posted Cypress Mine! session so that puts the date of broadcast circa 1986. Both tracks appeared on ‘Everybody Is Fantastic’ (1984), ‘Dig Me Up’ reworked as ‘Dreaming Drains’. The first 3 Microdisney were recently reissued on Cherry Red Records featuring Peel session tracks and B sides. Two further previously unavailable tracks ‘Victory’ and ’12 Novembers’ can be found on the Reekus Records compilation ‘Too Late To Stop Now‘.

Originally from Cork, Microdisney were Cathal Coughlan (vocals), Sean O’Hagan (guitar), Giordaí Ua Laoghaire (guitar), Chris McCarthy (bass) and Dave Galvin (drums). They recorded one Fanning session on 31st March 1981 featuring four tracks – ‘Cack Hand’, ‘Let’s Get Married’, ‘Mitchelstown’ and ‘Victory’. They also recorded no less than six Peel sessions. Please visit the Irish Punk & New Wave Discography to read more. Update: Have now updated with the full interview which was actually recorded on April 14th 1988, the night they played McGonagles and on the eve of their Cork show. The recording starts off in mono but then switches to stereo and there is a small interruption for the tape flip.
