Quarterdeck (In Concert)

Posted in live with tags , , on April 23, 2024 by Fanning Sessions

From Donegal, Quarterdeck were Lorraine Walls (vocals), Billy Robinson (bass), Shaun McCarron (sax), Paul Miller (keyboards), Laurence Doherty (drums) and Mick McCarney (guitar). Mick Harvey (Cast of Thousands) fronted an earlier iteration of the band. This tape is a charity shop find so details are non existent but it does sound like a radio broadcast. Quarterdeck released a number of singles in the mid 80s but a search on irishcharts.ie reports only ‘The Last War’ as having charted, reaching number 28 in January 1986.

The Cranberries (In Concert 1993)

Posted in Music with tags , , on January 21, 2018 by Fanning Sessions

The-CranberriesWe are still in shock at the very sad news of Dolores O’Riordan. There have been many great tributes and this morning Dave Fanning and Ian Wilson remembered Dolores by playing clips from this 1993 interview. Thanks to a reader we now have a recording of a live show by The Cranberries at the Tivoli on 18th December 1993. Dave broadcast this over 2 weeks so there is a join half way through and the 2 final tracks on each side of the C60 are abbreviated. We think you’ll enjoy the recording nevertheless. Thank you Padraig Keane for the recording.

Niall McGuirk of the Hope Foundation needs no introduction. He and Micheal Murphy decided to do something to support Syrian refugees and the result is an excellent new book titled ‘In Concert – Favourite Gigs of Ireland’s Music Community‘. As they say in the introduction they put the word out to friends and family asking – What was your favourite gig? The book features 105 of the replies they received arranged chronologically making for a must read book for the Irish music fan. It features contributions from members of bands many of whom have featured on this site – Those Handsome Devils, The Babysnakes, The Gorehounds, Engine Alley, That Petrol Emotion, The Undertones, Rocky DeValera, Paranoid Visions, Mexican Pets, Jam Jar Jail, In Tua Nua, The Devlins, Stiff Little Fingers, Bellx1, Thin Lizzy, The Frames, Lir, DC Nien, Tokyo Olympics, The Golden Horde, Whipping Boy, Pleasure Cell, Sultans of Ping, Luggage, The Pogues, Radiators from Space, Stano, Into Paradise, The Fountainhead, Aidan Walsh & Cactus World News. Also featured are a bunch of folk we know from the internet like Tony Clayton-Lea, Dave O’Grady, Colm O’Callaghan, Jim Carroll, Justin McDaid, Pete Murphy, Eoin Devereux, Paul McDermott and Garry O’Neill. Anyway you get the picture, the book is a great read, will have you kicking yourself you missed some of these shows, making your own list of fave gigs and maybe even get you up off the couch to go see some of these acts before they call it a day. The book is for a very good cause – all proceeds go to the Irish Red Cross and can be purchased for €15 including post+packaging here. Update: The official launch is in Liberty Hall at 7pm on January 24th.

The Dave Fanning Show on 2FM featured a weekly in concert segment with a 30 minute live recording from a band of the day. Something Happens! featured in session last week but we came across this recording on the Something Happens facebook group and couldn’t resist. It’s a two parter so we pretty have the full show. By the way the lads have just announced they are to play at the Killarney Festival on June 27th alongside The Undertones and The Frank & Walters.

This Blue in Heaven concert was recorded in RTE studio 1 in November 1985 and broadcast by Dave Fanning on his RTE Radio 2 (now 2fm) show over two nights. The concert was recorded by Paddy McBreen and produced by Julian Vignoles. With thanks to the listener, Owain from North Wales (yes Dave Fanning had a UK fanbase also) who dug this one out.

Formed by Nick Kelly, The Fat Lady Sings released two albums ‘Twist’ (1991) and ‘Johnson’ (1993). A retrospective double album ‘The Fat Lady Singles’ (2005) was also released. Nick is now an award winning short film maker. His latest musical alter ego is Alien Envoy who’s album ‘Nine Lives’ (2010) was the culmination of a nine month ‘gestation‘ project. Thanks to some comments we can confirm this show was recorded for ‘Seven Bands on The Up’ from the SFX in 1989.

Formed in Derry in 1975 by Feargal Sharkey (vocals), Damian O’Neill (guitar), John O’Neill (guitar), Michael Bradley (bass) and Billy Doherty (drums). The Undertones debut single ‘Teenage Kicks’, was released on Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations label in 1978 and so enamoured Radio One DJ John Peel that he declared it his “favourite record of all time”.

Engine Alley (In Concert)

The recent posts featuring concerts that Dave Fanning broadcast on RTE Radio 2 back in the day have proved popular, so to continue the theme and because the band in question is performing a gig in Whelan’s on July 23rd, today is the turn of Engine Alley from Kilkenny. I am not sure when this was originally broadcast and I’ve had to do some manipulation on the audio so I hope it stands up quality wise.

The Blades (In Concert)

Posted in Fanning, live, Music with tags , , on June 7, 2011 by Fanning Sessions

On Saturday I was enjoying some sunshine listening to Mr Fanning on the tranny talking to Paul Deacy about his trip to the Vespa World Days in Norway. Paul mentioned he was a big fan of The Blades and how he would love to see them perform again. It turns out Paul also runs a well known shop in Galway called ‘Bell Book & Candle‘ which is also home to independent record store Wingnut Records.

Bell Book & Candle is a legend of a shop in Galway. Based in the heart of the city centre next to the Crane bar, this quirky little place specializes in vinyls, comics, records, books and other rarities. A must-see for any Galway visitor, or indeed city-dweller. [super8ireland ]

The interview with Paul is now online and can be heard here:

A day later I received an email from a reader who had just dug out a radio recording of The Blades RTE in concert performance and who kindly offered to digitize and share it. Updating following some comments, the broadcast is from 1985 and is the second of a two part broadcast.
