Live at the Underground (1985)

We have been searching high and low for a digital copy of this 1985 compilation recorded at the famed Dublin institution ‘The Underground’. 32 years after the album was released Ken has come to the rescue – thank you!

As a new band, securing a headline gig in Dublin was nigh on impossible during that period – the Underground put on bands that no other venue would touch. Bands with no profile, no obvious crowd pulling appeal. That policy ensured that some of the finest Irish acts of that era took their early tentative steps on the cramped Underground stage – bands like Something Happens, The Stars of Heaven, A House, Engine Alley, the Slowest Clock, The Power of Dreams, The Fountainhead,  Into Paradise, Guernica, the Gorehounds, Therapy?, The Fat Lady Sings, the Would Bes – the list is endless.

The Sewing Room (1996 Peel Session)

To celebrate John Peel’s birthday we recently shared some old posts on facebook and twitter and that prompted one reader to enquire about The Sewing Room. We did some digging and now thanks to Eamonn Davis of the band we have their 1996 session for John Peel. The Sewing Room were Stan Erraught (guitar & vocals), Eamonn Davis (guitar & vocals), Colm Fitzpatrick (bass & vocals) and Dez Foley (drums & vocals). Stan was of course previously a member of The Stars Of Heaven, Eamonn and Colm were in Hey Paulette while Dez was in Wilder and Crumb. For more background on The Sewing Room check out the excellent post by Stephen Rennicks on his ‘Abstract Analogue’ site. PS If anyone has a recording of the as yet unlocated RTE Dave Fanning session please get in touch..

There we were, minding our own business, checking out how Aidan Gillen was faring, filling in for Tom Dunne on Newstalk. Aidan played a great track ‘Can’t Seem to Make You Mine‘ by Alex Chilton which he explained, he first heard in a cover version by The Stars Of Heaven. He then casually announced that the frontman of said Stars Of Heaven, Stephen Ryan had a new band The Drays. Now I know Stephen was recently active with The Dinah Brand but this new track to these ears at least seems to take up where The Stars Of Heaven left off. Check it out for yourselves..

According to Gillen (who was great by the way), The Drays are working on an album titled ‘Look Away Down Collins Avenue’ which is “still some way off”. We very much look forward to hearing it and fingers crossed, maybe even seeing the band perform live..

The Drays are: Stephen Ryan (guitar/vocals), Conor Brady (guitar/bass/shakers/tambourine), Paul Byrne (drums), Eileen Gogan (vocals).

Update: Now available on iTunes.

We’ve already featured one track from the the December 1984 Fanning Session by The Stars Of Heaven but today we have a second. The song was released one year later as the bands first single. Many thanks to Ken.

I suppose it is fitting that I never actually got to see The Stars Of Heaven live despite being a huge fan. Myself and a friend read in HotPress over Christmas that they were playing Dublin and we decided to hitch to Dublin (a 4 hour drive) to attend the gig as we lived in rural Ireland and nothing was happening. Things started very slowly and next thing we knew the sandwiches were gone and we still hadn’t got our first lift, we were faced with an embarrassing about face. We eventually got that first lift and then hit it lucky and we eventually made it to the venue on time only to find that the gig had been cancelled (or was it just HP that was wrong?). We ended up going to see An Emotional Fish and staying the night in Isaac’s Hostel. A good night was had by all despite the disappointment. As it turns out The Stars Of Heaven had called it a day. Watch the band perform here and if you like what you hear, do yourself a favour and get a copy of the 2006 reissues on Independent Records of Sacred Heart Hotel/Holyhead EP and/or Speak Slowly (HP review). Update: those two albums are now available as a free download over on the Independent Records site. The posthumous ‘Unfinished Dreaming‘ is also well worth checking out.

The first track was a single on Hotwire Records from May 1985. John Peel liked it so much he had the lads over for sessions no less than 4 occasions. Then we have a track from the April 1988 Fanning Session and finally a track from the December 1984 Fanning Session which unusually features Stan Erraught on lead vocals.
