The Studio 8 Sessions (2fm 29th Dec 2016)

Legend has it that the first Fanning session was by a band from Dublin called U2 in 1980. Whilst that event would have predated our tenure we can vouch for the importance in subsequent years of the Dave Fanning show to Irish rock music both in terms of the sessions recorded but also the demos played. Thanks to the efforts of Dave and long-time producer Ian Wilson the show was to become a veritable institution (not forgetting the efforts of Jim Lockhart, Pete Holidai and Paddy Breen who toiled in front of the console).

Originally broadcast Thursday December 29th on RTÉ 2fm and produced by Yvonne Judge, this special radio documentary looks back at the sessions recorded in Studio 8 over the last 36 years. It features contributions from Dave Fanning, Ian Wilson, Billy McGuinness and Christy Dignam (Aslan), Paul Cleary (The Blades), Gavin Friday (The Virgin Prunes), Martin Cowan (The Outcasts), Cathal Coughlan (Microdisney) and Noel Hogan (The Cranberries).

The Virgin Prunes

Today’s session track was originally broadcast a little before I started recording the Dave Fanning show. It was rebroadcast by Dan Hegarty on 17th March 2010, a show which featured tracks from five different ‘classic’ sessions.

The Virgin Prunes were formed in Dublin in 1977 and remained active until 1986 when Gavin Friday left. The rest of the band continued on as The Prunes, but they disbanded in 1990. The original lineup was Gavin Friday (vocals), Guggi (vocals), Dave-iD Busaras (vocals), Dik (Evans, guitar, brother of U2’s The Edge), Strongman (Trevor Rowan, bass, brother of Guggi) and Pod (Anthony Murphy, drums). Pod left and was replaced by Haa-Lacka Binttii (drums, tape loops, keyboards). The band signed to Rough Trade Records and released their first single ‘Twenty Tens (I’ve Been Smoking All Night)’ on their own Baby Records label in late 1980.

According to irishrock the Prunes recorded this track ‘J.R.’ for 2FM in 1981 as part of a session (one of two they recorded that year) which also featured ‘Trust’, ‘Pop Song’, and ‘Grey Light’. Dan however says the session dates from 1980 although as you’ll hear in his introduction the details are ‘sketchy’.
