Today we have a treat, a 45 minute recording of the Dave Fanning show from March 1983 courtesy the Irish Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Dave announces he is playing Irish tracks only and plays a number of sessions and even a demo we’d never previously heard from Blue In Heaven. There is one track we haven’t been able to identify so if you know your 80s Irish rock then please put us out of our misery. Updating year from 1984 to 1983 based on Evan’s comment.

u2 – surrender
max – song number 6 (session)
undertones – you’re welcome (live)
the outcasts (1981 session)
auto da fe – bad experience
some kind of wonderful – do you read my letter
pop mecanics – round & round (1984 session)
blue in heaven – say (demo)
blades – revelations of heartbreak
cuba dares (session)
?
microdisney – hello rascals
gerry cott? – ballad of the lone ranger

On July 20th 2017 RTÉ One broadcast the documentary ‘U2 agus an Arc’ looking at the role the Cork music venue played in the career of a nascent U2. In typical ‘No Disco’ guerilla fashion however the 24 minute documentary managed to cover a whole lot more. Other acts to feature include Mean Features, Nun Attax, Microdisney, The Specials and UB40. Among the interviewees were driving force behind the Downtown Kampus, UCC Entertainments Officer Elvera Butler (Reekus Records), Giordaí Ua Laoghaire (Nun Attax/Microdisney/Nine Wassies From Bainne), Úna Ní Chanainn (Five Go Down to the Sea?/RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra), Liam Heffernan  (Mean Features) and Ciarán Ó Tuama (Cypress, Mine). For further background check out Colm O’Callaghan’s excellent essay for The Blackpool Sentinel subsequently reposted by RTE as ‘U2’s Arcadian Dream – how one Cork music venue changed music forever‘.

U2 (1980 Fanning Session)

We’ve been asked a number of times over the years about the first Fanning session and we are happy, thanks to an excellent interview with Dave Fanning Show producer Ian Wilson by Jim Carroll in yesterday’s Irish Times, to finally put the issue to bed. Thanks to some fact checking by u2wanderer the year has now been confirmed as 1980.

Ian Wilson on the U2 session

It is apparent that the only chance we have of ever hearing this recording is if U2 were to release it. There still remains the outside possibility that some listener recorded that show and still has a copy..

These were taken during the production of the recent ‘Cork Rock‘ documentary part 2 of which will go out on the June bank holiday. More detailed analysis of the recordings can be found on u2songs.com.

Update: On Aug 1st 1979 Dave Fanning played three U2 tracks for listeners who were asked to pick the ‘A’ side on the band’s first single. Listen to an excerpt from that Bono interview on the RTE Archives site here.
