YouTube Channel & Playlists

Posted in Music, TV with tags , , , , , on October 25, 2016 by Fanning Sessions

Along with twitter, facebook, soundcloud, mixcloud accounts we also have a YouTube channel. In addition to a few videos rescued from VHS tapes generously sent by readers (there are some ‘No Disco’ tapes outstanding – on the TODO list!) we use playlists to track musical performances we come across from shows close to our hearts e.g. Anything Goes, Visual Eyes, Borderline, Megamix, On The Waterfront and No Disco. If you want to take a trip down memory lane these playlists might be a good starting off point and if you come across clips we missed then drop a line. Whilst on the subject a big thank you to all who have donated and uploaded priceless clips and a major tip of the hat to KillianM2 who continues to do sterling work. Now excuse us – we’re off to add an #MTUSA playlist..

Leagues O’Toole: Songs In The Key Of Life

We’ve been meaning to check out Nadine O’Regan‘s Saturday morning show ‘Songs In The Key Of Life‘ on TXFM for a while but when Leagues O’Toole featured that finally pushed us over the edge. Leagues is an author, broadcaster and music promoter. He is the man behind music magazine ‘Foggy Notions’, was host on RTE music show ‘No Disco‘ and filled in regularly on TodayFM for Tom Dunne and Donal Dineen back in the day. As you’ll hear in the interview he has also produced a documentary and written a book about Planxty.

No Disco (1993-2003)

A great piece by Colm O’Callaghan for The Blackpool Sentinel, ‘This is No Disco‘ prompted us to create a playlist of interviews and sessions from the much missed RTE TV show. ‘No Disco‘ was a no budget TV show produced by RTE Cork and presented by, in turn Donal Dineen, Uaneen Fitzsimons and Leagues O’Toole. While VHS is not our forte we have in the past managed to dig out a number of ‘No Disco’ recordings e.g. The Divine Comedy, The Harvest Ministers. Colm’s loose talk of mythical sessions by The Revenants, Edwyn Collins and John Hegarty mean another trip to the dreaded attic awaits.

While on the subject of ‘No Disco’, producer Rory Cobbe was interviewed by Ray Wingnut for the first ‘An Ciaróg Eile’ podcast (skip to 29 min mark)..

The Harvest Ministers (No Disco Acoustic Room)

Listening to Donal Dineen reminisce about ‘No Disco’ last week in his ‘An Ode To Radio‘ show got me thinking that I still had a couple of acoustic sessions recorded for that show which I hadnt yet shared. Aoife linked to The Divine Comedy last week and already someone has contacted me with the promise of 4 precious VHS cassettes of recordings. These Acoustic Room sessions were recorded in Fr. Matthew Hall which is just beside the RTE Cork studios. This particular recording is of The Harvest Ministers who we have already featured and they perform ‘I Never Raised My Voice to You’.

The Divine Comedy (No Disco – Acoustic Room)

I posted this on Twitter a few days ago but I might as well lash it up here. A reader graciously sent me a VHS with 4 hours of TV from 1994 and it contained a few gems more of which anon. This little ditty features Mr Neil Hannon aka The Divine Comedy performing ‘Three Sisters’. And that’s Donal Dineen of TodayFM ‘Small Hours‘ fame at the end. Do yourself a favour and check out his TodayFM show midnight – 2am Tuesday to Friday because TodayFM have decided to cancel it. The final show is on December 1st 2011 so no excuses.
