The Frames (1991 Demo)

Posted in Music with tags , , , on May 2, 2020 by Fanning Sessions

Sunday Miscellany last week on RTE Radio 1 featured an essay ‘Glen’s Gift‘ by Jackie Lynam. Our first thoughts when the piece finished were, does she still have the tape? Of course we reached out and Jackie was kind enough to share today’s featured track. Seafort Parade is an unreleased song from a cassette of demos given to Jackie by Glen Hansard the day before The Frames entered the studio to record their debut album. The photo is by Eoin O’B who by the looks of it also has some interesting tapes in his attic. For loads more Frames memories be sure to check out orderinthesound.

Glen Hansard – Daughter Of The Day (1990)

glen hansard - daughter of the day

To celebrate their 25th anniversary and upcoming Marquee Cork show we had a rummage through the tapes and dug out what we thought might be a track from an early Fanning session by The Frames. Thanks to a photo posted on the band facebook page by Marc McDonald it seems that is actually a track from a 1990 tape by Glen Hansard. The band on the recording are listed as Glen Hansard (vocals & guitar), Dec Jones (bass), Dave Clarke (drums, claps & tambourine), Darragh O’Neill (blues guitar on Golden Gates), Noreen O’Donnell (other vocals) and Pat Dunne (hammond organ & piano).

To any observer of the Irish music scene The Frames need no introduction. Formed 1990 in Dublin by Glen Hansard (guitar, vocals), Dave Odlum (guitar), John Carney (bass), Colm Mac Con Iomaire (keyboards, violin) and Paul Brennan (drums) this RTE 2FM Fanning Session track dates from May 1995. The remaining tracks were ‘Say It To Me Now’ and ‘Let It All Past’ (Interference cover).

Update: 12th July 2002 Dan Hegarty broadcast ‘All Things Must Pass’ from this session.
