Auto Da Fé

auto da fe

Auto Da Fé were formed in 1980 by Gay Woods (vocals, ex Steeleye Span, The Woods Band) and Trevor Knight (keyboards, ex No Buckets, Naima, Jimi Slevin Band) with Wout Pennings (guitar), Carel van Rijn (bass) and Theo Wanders (drums). Woods and Knight relocated to Ireland and were joined by Jimi Slevin (guitar), Mark Megaray (bass, ex Radiators) and Robbie Brennan (drums). The project was a big departure musically for Woods who had been successful as a folk artist. Auto Da Fe released a series of singles which performed well in Ireland but saw little success abroad. The singles ‘November November’, ‘Bad Experience’, ‘Man Of Mine’, ‘Somethings Gotten Hold Of My Heart’ and ‘All Is Yellow Hot Hot Hot’ were collected together as ‘5 Singles And 1 Smoked Cod‘ which can be purchased on iTunes. Phil Lynott, champion and friend of the band, variously produced, played and sang on the early singles and Midge Ure played guitar on and coproduced ‘Man Of Mine’.

Formed 1988 in Limerick They Do It With Mirrors were Kevin Brew (vocals), Daragh Dukes (guitar), Shane Collins (bass) and Damien Clifford (drums). ‘I’m As Furious As An Ox Who Has Been Refused A Seat On A Bus’ featured on the Xeric Records compilation ‘The Reindeer Age‘ in 1990. In 1992 Ger Fitzgerald replaced Shane Collins on bass. That same year they released two EPs on Setanta Records ‘The Last Real Baby’ and ‘Ox’. Daragh Dukes is currently active with Headgear a project which includes Kevin Brew and Pat Shortt among it’s members.

Or should that be . . .? From a cassette called ‘Why Go Bald’ a band who Dave says ‘always send in such interesting tapes’. If you know more about this band I would love to hear from you.

Luka Bloom

From Newbridge in Co. Kildare, Luka Bloom first came to prominence for this observer at least as Barry Moore, a member of Red Square, a Dublin based post punk act with George Sweeney (guitar, vocals ex Vipers) and Joe Lahart (bass). That band was active from 1983 until 1986 when Barry chose to pursue a career as a solo singer-songwriter which he has been doing successfully ever since. This track appeared on Luka’s 1988 solo album although I cannot confirm if this is that version of the track. Incidentally the track also appeared on a 2001 compilation ‘The Barry Moore Years‘ , a snapshot of the years 1975 – 1986. Luka has just released an album ‘Dreams in America‘ and is currently touring the UK.

The Little Fish (Demo)

little fish

I had originally credited this track to 33rd Hurricane but Finbarr Doherty of that band says while he would have been proud to have written this song that it was not them. Hopefully some eagle eyed/eared reader will be able to set this record straight in the not too distant future.

Happy to finally announce a successful resolution. Thanks to a kind benefactor who lent us his entire collection of precious Fanning tapes (thank you Thomas!) we came across another recording of this track which identifies the band as Little Fish. Little Fish were Jimmy Fitzgerald (vocals & guitar), Brendan Duffy (guitar), Turlough Moore (bass) and Kieran Joyce (drums). The Galway band recorded a Fanning session in November 1989 so our new mission is to track that down (and maybe a band photo to boot).
