Fab 50 vs Festive 50 – 2017 Readers Poll?

Posted in Fab50, Fanning, Music, Peel with tags , , on November 28, 2017 by Fanning Sessions

fanning

It’s that time of the year again, where we moan about how Fanning’s Fab 50 isn’t what it used to be. John Peel had the right idea with the Festive 50 – choose 3 favourite tracks released in the past year. We’d love to hear Dave play a show of his favourite tracks of the year. Anyway if the readers of a certain blog were to email, tweet or facebook their top 3 we could come up with our own Festive 50 to be published round about when Dave breaks out the eggnog. Anyone up for it?

It’s a Christmas tradition and who are we to argue. It was missed last year but in 2016 Dave Fanning’s Fab 50 is back with a vengeance and a new spin to keep us all on our toes (songs from 2000 on only). The votes have been counted and Dave will run down the millenium Fab 50 on RTÉ 2fm Friday 23rd 10pm – midnight and Saturday 24th December from 8-11pm.

In case you haven’t already, now might be a good time to check out the excellent Blackpool Sentinel essay on the Fab 50 which sheds some light on Dave Fanning and Ian Wilson’s contribution to the Irish music scene over the last 40 years.

We are looking forward to a radio documentary ‘The Studio 8 Sessions’ which is due to air on RTÉ 2FM Thursday December 29th at 6pm and will feature contributions from Gavin Friday, Christy Dignam, Liam Ó Maonlaí and Fiachna Ó Braonáin.

Fab 50 (1986) Part 6

Posted in Fab50, Fanning, Music with tags on December 22, 2010 by Fanning Sessions

Today’s episode is the last, I have no further tapes from the 1986 Fab 50. Previous episode here and (almost) complete listing here. I hope you enjoyed this series, I think it holds up very well and especially like the strong showing of irish acts. I have no further Fab 50 recordings as I found John Peel’s Festive 50 more interesting musically and those were the shows that marked my Christmases from then on.

17. Tuesday Blue – Tunnel Vision (1986)
16. The Doors – An American Prayer (1978)
15. The Pogues – Dirty Old Town (1985)
14. The Smiths – There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (1986)
{ 13. U2 – Pride (In The Name Of Love) (1984) }
12. New Order – State Of The Nation (1986)
11. The Waterboys – Death Is Not The End (Live On Fanning Show) (1986)
