Man Ray (Helden Flexi)

helden flexi

Man Ray were Brendan Morrison (vocals & guitar), Mary Mulrine (vocals & piano), Anthony O’Kane (rhythm guitar), Phil Crothers (bass) and Robert McGlone (drums). This track featured on a flexi given away with Helden fanzine in the late 80s. I believe that Man Ray like other acts featured in the short lived series were from Northern Ireland, in this instance they share the billing with Bam Bam & The Calling. The flexi is a little the worse for wear so the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired, but for now it is all we have. Thanks to Thomas Erbsloh for the flexi. Update via Phil Crothers: the band formed in 1986 with all but Robert McGlone meeting on the Foundation Year Art course in Rupert Stanley College, Belfast. They played across Ireland, recording a session for the BBC show ‘Across The Line’ and appearing on the BBC show ‘Channel One’ hosted by Jackie Hamilton (The Moondogs). Interest from label Polydor came just after the band decided to split.Robert is currently active with Jam Pact and Phil with Stonefish.

Hi folks. Anthony O’Kane (rhythm guitar) and Phil Crothers (bass) complete the line up for Man Ray. The band formed in 1986 with all but Robert McGlone meeting on the Foundation Year Art course in Rupert Stanley College, Belfast. The band played across Ireland, recording a session for the BBC show Across The Line and appearing on the BBC show Channel One hosted by Jackie Hamilton (The Moondogs). Interest from label Blanco Y Negro came just after the band decided to split.

  2. Hello Phil, thank you for the comment! What instrument did Robert, Brendan and Mary play? Would you have a band photo? Thank you!

  3. Phil Crothers Says:

Robert on Drums, Brendan on Vocals plus Rhythm and Lead Guitar, Mary on Backing Vocals and occasional (studio) piano. And yes, will dig out a photo and forward. Not sure what Anto is up to now, Brendan is in Chile and still playing, Mary has been a stalwart of the folk and traditional music scene and you know about Robert. I went on to play with a few other bands, but notably a band called Stonefish throughout the 90’s, and now recently reformed.

  4. Brilliant, thank you! Will update post later.

  5. Got the photo, thank you! If you had an mp3 I would do another post? 😎😇😉

  6. Phil Crothers Says:

Unfortunately I don’t have anything of Man Ray. I did get a hold of Robert and Mary though and still waiting to hear back from Brendan; Robert has a ¼ inch reel master and an ordinary cassette but no way to transfer digitally.

    I’ll keep you posted.

One thing that did transpire in the chat was that Blanco Y Negro was mentioned in a review, the interest was actually from EMI and Polydor, with Polydor actually getting in touch, but just after that band decided to split.

Will be in touch if I get anything through.

    Cheers
