Here Comes The Night

donal_dineen
Donal Dineen originally came to our attention as host of RTE2 TV music show ‘No Disco’. Since the launch of Radio Ireland in March 1997 he has been a stalwart of the Irish airwaves first with his show ‘Here Comes The Night’ (which followed the John Kelly hosted ‘The Eclectic Ballroom’) and latterly with his now TodayFM show ‘The Small Hours’. 14 years later on Thursday December 1st this show will come to an end. Tonight at midnight will see Donal’s last regular show playing records because tomorrow a recording of his “An Ode to Radio” show for Culture Night will air. Next week promises to be very special as Donal has lined up a long list of guests in studio including; Lisa O’Neill, katie kim, Cian Nugent, Sean Carpio, Sean MacErlaine, Niwel Tsumbu, Patrick Kelleher, catscars, Moths, Si Schroeder and Sunken Foal. The Small Hours Wake will take place on Friday December 2nd at The Joinery. Check out pieces from harmlessnoise, On The Record, Mick Heaney and a Hot Press interview from 2002. If anyone has any ‘Here Come The Night’ recordings they would like to share please drop us a line we promise to give them a good home. There are some ‘Small Hours’ shows and playlists on Donal’s TodayFM page as well as some ‘Fresh Air’ podcasts on iTunes. For the “Dineen motherlode” however check out smallhours.fm.

  1. Just a suggestion, but is there anyway your links could open in a separate page?

Love the site, keep up the good work!

  2. Howdy there,
I’ve just watched your No Disco Neil Hannon video and realised that I have a few video tapes which were lovingly used to record No Disco favourites back in the day. I have dug out these old tapes to find:
    2 of No Disco faves,
1 with highlights of Feile 90 (must have been on RTE2/ Network 2)
1 of interview with Nick Cave by Dave F himself (guessing the time of Let Love In or Murder Ballads)
I hope that the tapes are still playable, but with my VCR long departed, I can’t check them out. Not sure if they might be of interest. If you have the means of transferring them to digital format, I’d happily pass them on.
    Paul

  3. Fanning Sessions Says:

Hi Paul, I’d be delighted to get my hands on these and will gladly digitize them and keep a copy under lock and key in the archive. I will of course post the occasional teaser to YouTube.

I shall be in touch via email to arrange logistics.

    Thank you!

  4. Great stuff, Let me know about logistics.
